Class Blog 5/25

Today we practiced sketching objects. We first started out easy buy drawing a stool, then we moved on to draw objects on our desk (iron, pencil sharpener). We found that drawing guidelines made it much easier to sketch out the objects,.
Then, we played around with shapeshifter. We all made our individual objects for it to be printed on the 3D printer.

3/23 Design Class Blog Block 6

Today we drew more isometric designs on graph paper. The designs were a bit harder this as the shapes had circles and angled lines to them. We learnt also about 3D printing and printers in the second half of class, then the whole class put together a presentation of different 3D printed objects.

3/23 Design Class Block 4

Today in design we drew more 3D shapes on graph paper. This time we drew shapes with more circles and they were harder to draw. In the second half of class we learned about different types of 3D printers and found some interesting things to make in our new project and pasted those images onto a shared presentation.

March 16 DF6 Class Blog

Today we worked on completing our laptop stands and started writing our documents. Even though all groups didn't manage to finish, a few groups did and had enough time to start writing the document. It was a very effective class where most groups got a lot of work done.

Class Blog, March 22 (Wensday)

On wensday, we continued to work on drawing shapes. In class, we were tasked with doing some of the shapes from page four. We also handed in the homework given to us the class before. For Homework, we are instructed to finish the shapes we began in class, if not already done

3/21 Monday DF2

Today in class we finished the google doc for our computer stands and printed out the cards to explain how each stand works, and put them on display outside the classroom.

Homework for the next class is to finish the isometric drawings. You need 1 from each row on the first page, 3 from the second page - at least one with a bevel(diagonal surface), and 3 from the last page, one concave and one convex.

3/17 Friday DF2

Today in class we finished up our final designs for our standing desks.

Most people already had their basic design printed out but just needed to add some cool designs to improve the aesthetics.

Cutting out designs on the
laser printer

It was a bit of a struggle to get everyone's designs printed on time since there were three laser printers and six groups, but almost every group managed to finish their projects.

Week 10 Blog prompts Due 3/21

Week 10 Blog Prompts
Design & Fabrication 2, 4, 6
Photos to include: Photos 2+ of your laptop stand being used properly, with ergonomics in mind, so we see all the angles necessary to appreciate the construction and use of your stand. Screenshot of your display explanation.

**If you didn't quite get everything printed Thursday, just edit your blog post after class on Monday to complete it.**

Prompts

This week you finished your SECOND version of your stand, put it together, and wrote up a display card to "market" your product to those who see it on display.

  • What do you think is the most successful aspect of your project and why?
  •
  • Several teams found something in their second version they wanted to fix IF they had a chance to print again (time and materials being what they are, we are not printing another version). What, if anything, did you see that you would do differently if you had one more shot at it?

  • **Reminder - double check to see if you have all the files required in your Drive folder for class, and be caught up through THIS POST for mid-semester reports.
Please have your blog post done by Monday 3/21 at 8:00am (all classes), although earlier is always welcome.  Email me if you have any questions or issues.

Class Blog March 7, 2016 (Monday) and March 9, 2016 (Wednesday) - Outdated

First off, the reason why this blog post is combined between Monday and Wednesday is because I feel like there isn't enough material for just one day's worth, and there's too much for one week's worth.

On Monday, we had a substitute - Mr. Swist. Aside from the change in teacher, we continued work on the desk assembling. Testing on Wednesday showed that the desk's design didn't allow much stability though (there are plans to add a back brace.) We also had a few ornamental legs from last Thursday (which I wasn't there for), but the fact that they were cut all the way through with the design only served to weaken it. In the future, the design might just be burned on instead, because it would be a shame to get rid of such a good looking design. In the end, we'll have a burnt-side desk.

On Wednesday, we finished the final assembly and tested stability (our desk wasn't exactly very stable, but it's a prototype which needs some work, so.) We then did something a bit different - we did a "rotational assessment" which is basically just going in a circle around the room seeing different group's prototypes, assessing them. Aside from that, there wasn't much on Wednesday. Just testing and assessing.

Week 9 Blog Prompts Due 3/14

Week 9 Blog Prompts

Design & Fabrication 2, 4, 6
Photos to include: 1-2 photo of your laptop stand finished (preferably from 2 different views)

Prompts

This week you finished your first version of your stand, reviewed all of the other stands (5) in the class, and then processed the feedback you received from the other 5 teams and collaborated with your team to create options for revisions to fix or improve aspects of your design.
  • What are two things that you discovered in other people's designs that you thought were particularly effective?
  • Did you see things (construction techniques, sizes, angles, etc) in the other projects that you were able to adapt to your team's stand? Please explain.
  •
  • What was something you got for feedback to your team that you thought was a useful insight?
  • What was something that was a good suggestion for changes/improvements from the feedback forms?
  •
  • How are your design changes different from your teammates as you alter the original design that was cut? Please describe the changes and what they will do. (if a drawing is easier to explain, please draw, photograph and drop it in here with a caption)

Please have your blog post done by Monday 3/14 at 8:00am (all classes), although earlier is always welcome.  Email me if you have any questions or issues.

March 9th, Block 2 Design, Week 9

Today, we went around the classroom as groups, and looked at the other groups' projects. We gave feedback about the construction and practicality of the prototype.

Sunday, March 6, 2016

March 6th, Block 6 Design, Week 9

Today, we continued to work on our cardboard laptop stands. Each group finalized their illustrator file, printed one table, and then constructed it to see if it would assemble properly. After printing, everyone made design changes and fixed the problems they had with their desk to improve upon their project.

March 7th, Block 2 Design, Week 9

Today in class, we continued to work on our computer stands. Everybody tried to fix problems that they encountered with their prototypes. The people that were ready, showed other people their prototypes. They then gave feedback to each other about what worked and what didn't. It was helpful to be able to get feedback and groups were able to improve for next class.

Week 8 Blog Prompts Due 3/7

Design & Fabrication 2, 4, 6
Photos to include: 1 screenshot of your design IF you didn't include it last week. 2 photos of your cardboard laptop stand put together (empty and 1 holding a laptop).

Prompts

  • What, if any, changes did you make to your file after printing it out on paper? What issues did you need to address before your first cut?
  • What challenges did you face in getting your file cut on the laser cutter?
We talked about the role of the prototype to answer questions - now you are asking questions of your first "alpha" cardboard test:
  • What questions did you ask of your design? (hint: "does it work" is not detailed enough . . . and a given)
  • What challenges did your first cardboard version give you that you weren't expecting? (list them)
  • What are some of your ideas about how to address the challenges?
  • What are some of your ideas about improving the aesthetics of your design?

Please have your blog post done by Monday 3/7 at 8:00am (all classes), although earlier is always welcome.  Email me if you have any questions or issues.

March 3 Block 6

Today in class most groups finished off printing their models with the laser cutter and started to piece it together. After piecing it together, all groups analysed their stand and discussed what they could change about their project.

One example of a a functional sitting laptop desk, that is strong enough to hold up the laptop while having it over your legs.

Standing desk that needs more support so your laptop doesn't fall as soon as you put it on. Next class, is when we will come in with our revised plans and print it one last time.

March 3 Class Blog Block 2

Today many groups finished up printing out their pieces and they started sticking them together. Most groups are done printing their pieces but some still have to print more. There were some problems with setting colours in illustrator but those got fixed.

March 1 Block 2

Today we continued to work on our card board box project, and the majority of the class was done with the design and started to print them out. Our goal for next class is to finish cutting out our shapes, and make any adjustments if necessary.
