3D 7 Class Blog - 11/17/15

Today in class we had to continue working on our final project including finishing up our prototypes if we hadn't and if did complete it, we were supposed to continue our work on our final completed project. People in our class are doing laser cutting, 3D printing, and wood cutting for their final designs.

Homework:
Continue working on your final project with touchups as well as doing work out of class to complete on time.

10/22 3D Design

Today in 3D design students spent the majority of the class period coming up with 10 needs that they have that could be fixed by a design project utilizing the 3d printer or laser cutter and within the materials that we have available to us. The purpose of this is to eventually narrow down those 10 design needs to a final project.

We introduced 5 WHYs and how we might troubleshoot our problem as the next step in the design process. In addition Cuber files were revised as necessary for printing. At this point in time every student should have at least one 3D printed project completed.

Fusion 360 files into .cubepro form for printing
Files in google drive folders for Ms. Sutter
New shape or revising current shape for new output via 123D Make (slot construction cardboard).

HW: 10 potential gaps (ideas for projects), all of which would have at least 5 other people you know who would have a similar "need".

10/2 3-D Design

Today we started to work on Fusion 360 to make our own 3-d designed artwork. Everyone has started to design completely different things as they can make anything they want to. For example, the person who made the design in the first screenshot has decided to make a coffee cup.

Homework: Blog post
Prompts:
What are three things that you found interesting from the presentations on Wednesday and Friday?
How is your exploration of Fusion360 going?
What are you currently designing and why?
What do you find most fascinating about the 3D printed object you chose to feature from online resources?

30/9/15 3D Design

Today we did part 2 of the presentation and we got through the last 3 remaining groups. We also started working on fusion 360 however most of us weren't able to go it since it took a while to download.

Homework: N/A

9/24 3D Design

We worked on our presentation that we will give on Monday.  Some of us also used the laser cutter to cut our paper lanterns out.  The homework is the blog and work on presentation for Monday.

25/9/2015 3D Design 7

Today, or rather Yesterday we worked on getting our presentations in working order.  Making sure each person knows what to say and how to say it.

A Video slide

Hopefully by Monday next week, no one will be caught off guard on the presentation!

9/11 3D Design 7

Today in class, we finalized our projects by putting in designs in the paper lanterns. Last class most of the us only did the cut lines and fold lines but we used different shape tools and trace tools to make our only one design on these paper lantern.

This is an example of what the design might look like.
What was most challenging for everyone was to make sure that the shape you cut out for your design, doesn't cover the tabs. If your shape is a little too close to the sides, the tabs will block part of it and it will look funky.

The machine is finally set up and we will be able to actually cut out our paper lanterns!

9/9 3D Design 7

Today in class, after we uploaded our original design to Inkscape, we were asked earlier to create red and green lines for cuts and folds for our design.
Original Design

Green Lines for Cut lines

Red lines for fold lines
Afterwards, we were asked to find a design/pattern we could use to add interesting textures to our eventual 3D design.
Design in green to cut them out of the design
All of our cut and fold lines including the design, were to all be on separate layers, which was challenging as well as Inkscape not working for many people on the first attempt. We are almost done and just need to get final checks and then we can print and cut them into nice 3D models.

Homework:
Continue working on design/pattern on your original design. Try to get as much done before class.

9/7 3D-Design 7

Today in class we moved on from isometric orthographic projections to other foldable designs.

We downloaded Inkscape as we will be using a vector file format, which means our designs are stored as lines instead of pixels. Unfortunately downloading Inkscape is quite the challenge and took a while in class, but we need the format it outputs to feed into the laser cutter.

The equivalent of a teapot in foldable 3D design is probably some sort of lantern -- an easy to make object that gives a nice result. Thus all of us looked for interesting lantern designs which we might want to create.

Here's the lit example from Ms. Sutter

But we couldn't just cut a 3D concept, we needed a 2D projection. Instead of making these designs we found them online, but we'll be making the pattern of the designs on the actual faces.

Within Inkscape we set up some complicated document settings so that we were able to trace the pattern. Be sure to use the different colors for different cuts!

Homework:

1. Try to outline as much of the pattern as you can.
2. Think about the design for the faces.

9/3 3D Design-7

Today we started off class by turning in our homework and having a emergency drill. When we got back we started to draw our own cutaway drawings. When we finished drawing them we cut them out and folded them into the shape we were given.

Homework:
Continue researching your topic.
Start and finish your Week 2 blog post.

1/9 3D Design-7

Today we helped and corrected each others orthogonal projections in class and also got into groups to work on our powerpoints. The powerpoints are to showcase the technology that our individual groups are studying/working on. The powerpoints should have Pictures and limited texts.

Homework:
More Orthogonal Drawings - 1-6 on the new sheet

Complete your blog post for week 1 if you haven't done so already

8/28 3D Design-7

Today we started off with getting blog urls into the form, and accepting the invitation to join the class blog. Next on the digital front everyone created a Pinterest account or added  a new 3D Design board to an existing account, and found 5 or more interesting images to pin to it.

The second part was organizing into teams on topics related to 3D Design, so the teams could present to the class what they find.  The class selected topics including Kinetic Sculpture / Fine Art, Housewares (including things like iphone cases, vases, lamps, etc), Automotive, Architecture, Fashion (anything wearable, textiles, etc), Medical / biological, Personally powered wheeled devices (bicycles, skateboards, scooters, etc), Robotics, and Toys.

Last but not least we revisited Orthogonal Projection drawings that were completed as homework, and started the next 8 figures (due Tuesday).

8/26 3DDesign-7

Today was our first full class period.  We started by setting up individual blogs, and then created a demo post with a photo and link to the source of the image.

The second half of the class was spent introducing the idea of orthographic projection from isometric drawings/models. Hooray for graph paper and rulers! We did the first figure together, then everyone tried the next one on their own.

Homework is to FINISH THE FIRST FOUR FIGURES, with projection lines in highlighter, labeled appropriately (front, top, right).

Two isometric figure handouts and one example of multi-view orthographic projection.
