9/7 3D-Design 7

Today in class we moved on from isometric orthographic projections to other foldable designs.

We downloaded Inkscape as we will be using a vector file format, which means our designs are stored as lines instead of pixels. Unfortunately downloading Inkscape is quite the challenge and took a while in class, but we need the format it outputs to feed into the laser cutter.

The equivalent of a teapot in foldable 3D design is probably some sort of lantern -- an easy to make object that gives a nice result. Thus all of us looked for interesting lantern designs which we might want to create.

Here's the lit example from Ms. Sutter

But we couldn't just cut a 3D concept, we needed a 2D projection. Instead of making these designs we found them online, but we'll be making the pattern of the designs on the actual faces.

Within Inkscape we set up some complicated document settings so that we were able to trace the pattern. Be sure to use the different colors for different cuts!

Homework:

1. Try to outline as much of the pattern as you can.
2. Think about the design for the faces.
